Personality:
At the beginning of the series, Haruhi's first day at North High School, she seemed to be a cold unsociable person, but after forming the SOS-Brigade, she reveals her true self, which is very spontanous, upbeat and hyperactive. Haruhi is almost never seen sad or worried but rather cheerful and very carefree. Although she is really pretty, has an attractive figure and good grades, she rejected every single boy who dared to confess to her because she isn't interested in >normal< boys, as she says herself.
Due to the fact that she's very fond of aliens, espers and time-travellers she wishes to proofr that such persons really exist but does not gain any friends that way. If something does not go the way she wants it to go she tends to get hot-headed and reckless.
Haruhi does not mind changing clothes in front of boys (Kyon is some exseption nevertheless), loves to gain attention and is often seen making fun of Asahina Mikuru, who is often forced to cosplay as maid or bunny.
She has also a rather great tendency to get jealous if Kyon gets too friendly with other girls. As stated by Koizumi Itsuki, Asahina Mikuru and Nagato Yuki Haruhi "chose" Kyon. Haruhi is often shown worried about Kyon (she did not leave his side when he was in coma for three days) and seems to trust him the most. Her warming up is also caused due recently talking to Kyon, which indicates Haruhi as being in love with Kyon.
Although she did not seem to mind when he kissed her, she does not seem to know of her own true feelings ...

Background:
Haruhi Suzumiya is a 16-year-old North High School student, who has a great interest in the supernatural, especially in espers, time-travelers and aliens. The last thing Haruhi would want is a normal High School life because she's of the opinion that everything normal is boring as well, as a result many classmates choose to avoid her.
The reason for her being interested in the supernatural has its origin in her childhood, when she attended a Baseball game with her family she noticed that her life was nothing special. Now she works hard to make it become and stay special and unique.
Before she began warming up while having conversations with Kyon she joined every single club and quit after one try-out because all of them were too normal and therefore too boring for her. When she later found the SOS-Brigade she forced Kyon to join, thus she has taken an interest in him.
Haruhi is stated to be "God" by the other members of the SOS-Brigade, who are time-traveller (Asahina Mikuru), esper (Koizumi Itsuki) and alien (Nagato Yuki) without Haruhi knowing it.
They explain to Kyon that Haruhi has the ability to alter, destroy and create the world to her liking triggered by her emotions and desires, but she uses that ability accidentally, without knowing that she's able to.

Haruhi opened her eyes, but she wasn't looking at her bedroom nor was she laying in her bed.
The city she looked at seemed to be completely destroyed. Her head hurt, but that did not matter at all, this place was too cool. She jumped up in excitement.
Wow!! This looks so cool! I must have travelled to another world or maybe time~!
She had tried to meet someone from a different time for so long, but now it seemed she had become such a person herself.
These giants were pretty cool themselves but this ...
This is so great! Amazing! My dream's finally come true!
Haruhi kept laughing to herself. What a pity that Kyon was not there with her ...
Kyon ..., she kept thinking. What had happened before she woke up in this place?
Had he really just ...?
... kissed me. She could not help but blush at this thought. It had to be a dream, she was sure, why would he... ? But ... if she had dreamed it, wouldn't it be worse? Dreaming about being kissed by Kyon ... Does that mean ... I'm... in love with Kyon?
Without further thinking she loosened the two hair ribbons she was wearing, knotting them together she used them to make herself wear a ponytail.
"You said a ponytail would suit me, that you think girls wearing ponytails are moe, didn't you ..., Kyon?", she whispered to herself, smiling happily, still watching her surroundings.
